As the holiday season approaches we are seeing more and more advertisements for video games, something you’d have never seen just a year ago. It appears the momentum is back and stores are eager to get customers in the doors to pick up the latest and greatest in technology. Or, in the Atari 2600’s case, the cheapest alternative for gaming (it’s only $45).
The NES Deluxe Set is featured in the latest Toys R Us ad for Madison, Wisconsin, priced at $139.97. It includes the Control Deck, 2 games (Duck Hunt and Gyromite), 2 controllers, the Zapper light gun, and R.O.B. the Robot. Most of the retailers are also now carrying just the Control Deck package, which has a suggested retail price of $99.99, but is frequently discounted to $79.99. This set includes the NES Control Deck, 2 controllers, and for a limited time a free copy of Super Mario Bros., which is still the best game for the new system. For your money, we recommend going with this configuration as it costs less and delivers a more entertaining experience.
If you’re looking to pick up some extra games, you might want to consider Pinball, Donkey Kong Jr., Kung Fu, or Ice Climber. If you’re into sports, the best of the bunch is Golf and Tennis. Keep in mind that third party games have started to hit store shelves, with more on the way. Next month looks especially meaty with games like 1942, Commando, Ghosts ‘N Goblins, and Karate Champ releasing from companies like Capcom and Data East.
