Nintendo doesn’t have a shortage of platform games on the Wii U or the 3DS. As much as I love the genre, even I was beginning to feel a bit of fatigue. Just last year alone, the Wii U had Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Super Mario Maker, and Yoshi’s Woolly World. However, where Nintendo has been lacking is in the 3D platforming realm. We never received a proper Super Mario Galaxy 3 or something in the vein of Mario 64. Sure, we saw the amazing Super Mario 3D World, but mechanically the game felt more like the 2D games than the 3D ones.
Luckily Rainy Night Creations is taking a stab at the genre. FreezeME is a 3D platform game that features vast worlds to explore. Graphically the game is very bright and colorful and has more than a passing resemblance to past Mario games. It can be played with the Game Pad, the Wii Remote, or the Pro Controller.
One of the unique mechanics in the game is the ability to freeze objects in place to create platforms that can be used to reach new areas. You play as “R” who is trying to rescue her best friend “M”, who has been abducted by Fat the Cat. Not exactly top-notch story telling, but many times a story isn’t needed in these types of games. In order to infiltrate the lair and rescue your friend, you will need to forge a special key from ancient materials that can be collected throughout the stages.
FreezeME will launch on the Wii U eShop on February 4. If you purchase it in the first week of availability, you can snag it at a discounted price of $9.99. After that it will go back up in price to $13.99. We’ll try to get a review code to let you know what to expect.
