Are you ready to play the cutest game of 2017?*

Join Yoshi and his loyal friend Poochy in the Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World game, a lovingly crafted side-scrolling platform game for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. Launching on Feb. 3, the family-friendly game features six captivating and challenging worlds, each knitted to life with its own uniquely woven theme and bursting at the seams with secrets and collectibles.

By tapping the new Yarn Poochy amiibo figure – available separately or in a bundle with the game – Yoshi can summon support from his friend in each stage. The Yarn Poochy amiibo figure also unlocks timed challenges for Poochy-themed stages that reward new designs for Poochy once players complete the missions. And the Yarn Poochy is not the only amiibo figure that works in the game. Try tapping the Animal Crossing or Splatoon series amiibo figures to play as a new pattern for Yoshi like Tom Nook, Isabelle, Callie or Marie. Tapping compatible amiibo figures and seeing what Yoshi will look like is part of the fun of playing. Many amiibo are compatible, so try as many amiibo figures as possible!

New to the series, the Craft Yoshi mode will let you design your own patterned Yoshi. Using intuitive tools, you can use the Nintendo 3DS touch screen to design your own colorful and stylized Yoshi character. Your favorite pattern can even be shared through StreetPass!

In addition to the game, one animated short starring Yoshi and Poochy will be unlocked every day for 30 days for people that own the game. These short stop-motion animations can be viewed through a menu in the game.

Less experienced players looking for a little help can easily switch to Mellow Mode while playing Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World to gain the assistance of Poochy Pups. These sweet little Pups will sniff out secrets and wrap up enemies, and can even double as yarn balls for Yoshi to throw.

Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World will be available on Feb. 3 at a suggested retail price of $39.99, and can be purchased in stores, in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS and at Nintendo.com. A limited-edition bundle that includes the game and the Yarn Poochy amiibo will also be available on Feb. 3 at a suggested retail price of $49.99. Additionally, the Yarn Poochy amiibo can be purchased separately at select retailers at a suggested retail price of $16.99.

*We can’t confirm that Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World will indeed be the cutest game of the entire year, but it is definitely adorable.

[Updated 12/5/16 – New Details]:

The January issue of Game Informer has shipped and new details for Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World have emerged. This 3DS port of the Wii U game that released last year is scheduled to launch on February 3, 2017. Part of the draw of the portable version is that brand new stages and challenges will feature Poochy, the adorable dog who must make it to the end of special runner stages, all the while trying to collect as many gems as possible. Unfortunately there are only five such stages added to the game, but if you’ve never played the Wii U version, then the entire game is new to you!

Another addition, which was talked about briefly during the Nintendo Direct earlier this year, is the ability to edit and create new Yoshi skins via the 3DS touchscreen. The Wii U version only featured different skins when you tapped specific amiibo to the GamePad.

Perhaps the most interesting news to come from Game Informer is that the port will run better on the New 3DS than the original models. Thanks to its more powerful CPU, the New 3DS will display the game at 60 frames-per-second, whereas the original models will be stuck at 30. That’s a nice perk for those of us that have the upgraded system.

The only real bummer about this port is that Nintendo has axed the two player co-op support that was included in the Wii U version. I really wish Nintendo wouldn’t get so hung up over including co-op modes in its 3DS platformers. Just once I’d like for them to allow the co-op mode, while not restricting both players to the same screen. Since each player would have his or her own view, it would be fun if they’d create a platforming game that allowed for one player to go ahead in the level without having to worry about the other person. This is definitely an opportunity missed, but the core game is so much fun to play that if you missed the Wii U version, the 3DS game should definitely be on your radar.

[Original Preview]:

One of my favorite games last year on the Wii U was Yoshi’s Woolly World. It had an amazing visual aesthetic and the level designs were creative and fun. It’s quite honestly the best Yoshi game since the original Yoshi’s Island on the Super Nintendo.

Most likely due to the fact that the Wii U hasn’t sold well, and the need for Nintendo to make money off of its investments in software, it’s bringing the console game over to its 3DS handheld. This is a smart move as there are over 60 million units out in the wild compared to just over 10 million Wii U systems. That means there’s a decent chunk of people who have yet to enjoy the game.

All of the levels of the Wii U game are included here. New to this version is the ability to play as Poochy, the cute dog. There will be challenge levels where he will need to collect as many beads as he can as he makes his way to the goal. 30 small animated shorts will be included on the cartridge and a special yarn Poochy amiibo will be made available on launch day: February 3, 2017. I’m not sure if I’ll double dip, but this is an excellent addition for those who haven’t had a chance to play the game yet.

My son loves this game on the Wii U. He is just two and a half years old, so he can’t play the game on his own yet, but he really enjoys watching it. Sometimes he just grabs my hand and pulls me to the TV and asks me to start ‘Shi (as he calls Yoshi). Then he turns on the TV, grabs his Mario Amiibo (so he can later tap it to the controller when I least expect it) and gets ready to play the game. Before we start a level, we have to enter the Yoshi Hut where he carefully chooses a Yoshi (usually the green one, because that’s the real Yoshi), and we always have to take Poochy with us… because it’s dangerous to go alone.

My son really loves Poochy and I am very happy that I will be able to surprise him with a Yarn Poochy Amiibo. The game will be released just one day after his third birthday, so the timing is perfect!
