Super Mario Odyssey Crosses 1 Million Sold In Japan; Switch Nears 3 Million

Super Mario Odyssey is the second Switch game to cross the 1 million sold mark in Japan, according to figures provided by Media Create. Splatoon 2 was the first with a total 1,530,859 sold so far this year. Super Mario Odyssey is sitting at 1,082,650, which is a great number since the game hasn’t even been on store shelves for two months yet. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is almost across the finish line with 945,232 sold for the year.

The Nintendo Switch has been selling incredibly well since it launched back on March 3. In Japan the system’s sales have been heavily constrained by limited supply. It’s not uncommon for retailers to still hold lotteries to see who gets the chance to purchase a Switch. Nintendo promised better supply in December, and it seems like they’ve delivered.

For the week of December 11 – 17, Nintendo sold 221,210 Nintendo Switch consoles in Japan. That’s up from the prior week’s 164,908. For the year the system has sold 2,908,416 units, over half as many life-to-date system sales of the PS4 and PS4 Pro combined. That’s very impressive for just over 9 months of sales! In fact, the Switch is only about 400,000 shy of surpassing the Wii U’s lifetime sales in Japan. If we have another couple of weeks of sales like this one it will have blown past it by the end of the year. Crazy!

Here are the top 20 games for the week ended Dec. 17 and the hardware details:
