May 2019 NPD Sales Results

The NPD Group has released some sales data for May 2019 and overall the picture isn’t as pretty as we’ve become accustomed to. The entire video game market is down 11% year over year for the month ($641 million versus $717 million). Making up that number is hardware at $149 million (down 20%), software at $262 million (down 13%) and accessories at $230 million (flat). For the year video game sales are down 3% overall.

This is the lowest software sales for the month of May since 2013 – signaling a lack of compelling software making it to the market. This is illustrated by having Mortal Kombat 11 once again taking the top spot in the software charts for the month. Day’s Gone for PS4 also retained its number two position.

As for hardware, well we’re in a transition period where prospective buyers are no doubt waiting to see what’s next from Sony and Microsoft. The existing systems haven’t seen a price break in a long time, giving little incentive for new customers to jump in. The sole exception is the Switch, which once again dominated hardware sales for the month. No doubt the hybrid system is a huge hit with vacationers being able to take it along with them wherever they go during the summer. For the year the Switch is number one in both unit and dollar sales.
