Nintendo’s 3rd Quarter FY 2020 Financial Results

Nintendo has just released its third quarter earnings results for this fiscal year (April 1, 2019 – December 31, 2019) and the results are very positive for the company. Sales for the period reached 1,022.6 billion yen. Operating profit was 262.9 billion yen. Ordinary profit came in at 273.8 billion yen.

Nintendo Switch sales for the reporting period came in at 17.74 million sold (22.5% increase year-over-year). Of those, 12.56 million were the original Switch model and 5.19 million were the Switch Lite, which was introduced on September 20, 2019. Last year Nintendo sold 14.49 million Switch systems in the same reporting period. The total install base worldwide for the Nintendo Switch is now at 52.48 million! For those keeping score, they have now surpassed worldwide sales of the Super Nintendo (49.1 million). Nintendo is forecasting 19.5 million Switches sold for the fiscal year, which should hopefully be easily achieved over the next three months (Jan. 1 – March 31), especially with Animal Crossing: New Horizons launching on March 20.

Nintendo has been very successful on the Nintendo Switch software side of things as well! For the nine month reporting period they have sold 123.13 million games (30.1% increase year-over-year). That’s up from last year’s reporting of 94.64 million pieces of software sold during the same timeframe. In fact, 21 games have now sold over 1 million copies on the system (including third party). Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to lead the charge with 22.96 million sold life to date. Pokémon Sword and Shield were both extremely popular with a collective sell-in of 16.06 million copies. Nintendo’s other big holiday title, Luigi’s Mansion 3, has gone on to sell 5.37 million copies.  Both Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Astral Chain barely broke the 1 million threshold with 1.02 million and 1.03 million sold respectively.

New releases throughout the year have continued to sell well, including Super Mario Maker 2 with 5.04 million, Zelda: Link’s Awakening with 4.19 million, Fire Emblem: Three Houses with 2.58 million, and Ring Fit Adventure with 2.17 million. Evergreen titles have been on fire as well with Zelda: Breath of the Wild selling an additional 3.56 million (lifetime sales of 16.34 million), Super Mario Odyssey bringing in another 2.15 million (16.59 million lifetime), and Super Mario Party adding another 2.72 million (9.12 million lifetime).

Nintendo is forecasting sales of 140 million games for the fiscal year. With titles like Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons coming out during the next quarter, it looks like they’re well on track to reaching that goal.
